Symptoms

The most common symptoms relate to feeling thirsty, passing urine frequently and fatigue.However, one of the biggest challenges with diabetes is that frequently there are no symptoms, resulting in a delay in diagnosis - and the ones of type 1 diabetes is often sudden and dramatic.

Type 1 and type 2 diabetes may be present if the following are being experienced:
 

  • Abnormal thirst and a dry mouth
  • Frequent urination
  • Extreme tiredness/lack of energy
  • Constant hunger
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Slow-healing wounds
  • Recurrent infections
  • Blurred vision

OR

  • Always feeling tired or drowsy
  • Being more irritable or moody than usual
  • Frequent urination
  • Sudden, unexplained weight loss
  • Feeling thirsty and or hungry more than usual
  • Tingling or numbness in legs, feet or fingers
  • Mouth feeling dry most of the time
  • Slow healing sores, cuts or bruises
  • Family history of diabetes.

 

Type 2 diabetes can take several years to diagnose, can be hard to detect and by which time various other complications may also be present.
